It is based on the 1998 dark horse comic book limited series of the same name by frank miller and lynn varley. Retelling the ancient battle of thermopylae, it depicts the titanic clash in which king leonidas (gerard butler) and 300 spartans fought to the death against xerxes (rodrigo santoro) and his massive persian army. With the council unwilling to release soldiers until after the religious festival, leonidas sets out with his 300 strong personal army to meet xerxes' men at a narrow pass knowing they must hold off the approach for as long as they can until the army arrives even if it means their deaths.
