Add, for example, py import duel into your ~/.gdbinit. Its main goal is to reduce the number of gdb commands needed to inspect the status of current program thus allowing the developer to primarily focus on the control flow. This method requires that python code breakpoints are set explictly in the python code.
For windows, there is a recent enough gdb build in mingw, but it doesn't seem to include the python module you can import (still supports python scripting in gdb).
